In 2028, a kilometre in a Tesla Robotaxi is expected to cost $0.37, nearly half the price of Waymo ($0.62), and a third of the price of ride-sharing ($1.06).
This frugality rests on:
- a modular industrial architecture, natively designed to minimise the cost per kilometre,
- optimised final assembly,
- the absence of costly sensors (such as LiDAR).
A massive acceleration of the fleet
Since June 2025, 200 vehicles have been undergoing tests in fully autonomous driving mode (Full Self Driving) in Austin (Texas), with no safety driver.
2035 target: 1 million Robotaxis on the road, representing 60% of vehicles in fully autonomous driving mode.

Tesla’s AI learns from real-world situations, at scale, whereas its competitors operate in geographically limited and heavily mapped areas.
The 2026 challenge: the Cybercab
The start of mass production of the Cybercab has been announced for April 2026. It will be a Robotaxi vehicle natively designed to minimise the cost per kilometre… with no steering wheel and no pedals!
