Memory is the future of AI…

While AI models are the focus of attention, memory architecture is an underestimated performance lever.

Infographic, in French, “The future of AI rests on high bandwidth memory (HBM)”: on the left, conventional DDR (Double Data Rate) memory, horizontal, shown as chips spread across a circuit board; on the right, HBM (High Bandwidth Memory), vertical, shown as chips stacked in a tower; at the bottom, “Maximised density = minimised space”. Second page of the infographic, in French: a chart of energy consumed against the distance travelled by the data, lowest for HBM and highest for DDR; at the bottom, “Data closer to the processor: reduced latency, increased bandwidth, reduced energy consumption”.

While AI models are the focus of attention, memory architecture is an underestimated performance lever:

  • AI’s exponential needs exceed the capabilities of the horizontal architecture of conventional DDR memory
  • The vertical architecture of HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) delivers greater density in a compact space:
    • Data / processor proximity
    • Reduced latency
    • Much higher bandwidth
    • Reduced energy consumption

When every millisecond and every unit of energy counts, memory offers a competitive advantage.

Micron Technology is one of the leaders in HBM memory: it is held in Finaltis portfolios.
