Apple: consumer agentic AI… without bearing the cost of LLMs?
Many consider Apple to be lagging behind in the race for generative AI models. Yet the group’s strategy appears to lie elsewhere: not to compete head-on with LLMs, but to turn every iPhone into an intelligent and secure personal agent, capable of orchestrating the best AI available.

Yet the group’s strategy appears to lie elsewhere: not to compete head-on with LLMs, but to turn every iPhone into an intelligent and secure personal agent, capable of orchestrating the best AI available.
- The iPhone becomes the user’s digital vault: identity, context, habits, permissions, payments, personal data…
- Siri interprets the user’s intent and selects the most relevant AI for the need at hand: ChatGPT, Gemini (Alphabet Inc.), Claude (Anthropic) or others in the future.
- Complex processing is offloaded to the cloud, while confidentiality is preserved thanks to Apple’s secure architecture.
iPhone users will thus no longer have to choose between ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude: Siri will arbitrate in the background to call on the best model at the right time, then carry out the action directly within the apps.
Apple’s real strength could therefore lie in the combination of two unique advantages:
- An integrated hardware and software ecosystem, optimised around the iPhone, which knows its user, understands their context and guarantees secure use.
- Seamless access to a galaxy of specialised AI models, scalable and potentially unlimited, without having to bear the gigantic costs of training the models alone.
Apple may not be seeking to win the model war… but the war for the intelligent interface between the user and every AI on the market.
